Scouting Possibilities Plus Travel Plans

_apr27__2We pretty much spent the weekend with Justin but I already talked about that in my last blog. After that he was back on duty and we were off scouting to see what was close to our RV site.  It really felt good to put those levels down and know that we were going to be able to stay put for a few weeks.  We’d been so busy over the last month trying to figure out how to stay ahead of the storms and where we would be able to stay, that we almost forgot what it felt like to relax a bit and it really felt good.  I’ve been so busy in fact, it’s been difficult to keep up with my genealogy blogs and I know I just won’t ever get caught up now._apr27__3

We started Monday morning checking out what was within a mile from us.  We needed a little activity instead of just riding. There’s an awful lot almost in walking distance.  First on the list was Lake Bradford.  It’s a beautiful little lake about a mile from us.  Right across the road is a boat and kayak rental place just in case Justin wanted to join us kayaking.  The temperature is supposed to start warming up on the weekend.

It definitely is spring with all the babies we’ve seen!

We also discovered a bowling alley.  Golly, we hadn’t bowled in years and years.  Instead of just checking out the bowling alley, we actually decided to give it a try.  Believe me my scores were no where near what they used to be when I bowled league.  They were closer to scores that 5 year olds get … except for the last one which was good.  Terry doesn’t know it yet but we’ll be going back.  For $13.50 we both rented shoes and bowled three lanes.  Our scores are a secret but what a deal it was!

After that it was a few rounds on the bike in the park.  I could certainly tell I hadn’t used those leg muscles in a long time.  So, I’m thinking I’ll be doing that a lot more often than I have been.

There’s also a golf course here and our plans include giving the driving range a try before we actually get on the course.  We were never good but at least at the driving range we’ll have an idea of how bad we really are.  We can get a bucket of balls for $4 and for 18-holes of golf with a cart, it’s only$25 _apr27__13.   What a deal!

Out came our bags … we were getting ready.

Just across the road from where we’re parked is a wildlife viewing area.  The beach is just around the corner too.  However, the things to do I listed above has nothing to do with other things wchesapeake hope to see that we haven’t seen in the past.  We’d like to drive the 17.6 mile Chesapeake Tunnel. It’s actually not all tunnel but there are tunnels and bridges included.  In 1964 it was named “one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world.”

Obviously, not my picture but a commercial one advertising the Chesapeake Tunnel.

We also hope to visit Fredericksburg and maybe Richmond.  We’ve been through both of those towns but never visited.  So right now, it’s on our list of things to do.  Also on our list in the near future is to visit friends, Ed and Linda, who are less than 40 miles away at Williamsburg.

Other plans are coming into place now too --- finally!   We’ve found a storage lot for the RV and we’re parking our vehicle in Justin’s backyard for about 6 weeks while we fly west  ….. perfect for sure. When we return, we’ll make our way to Roanoke (265 miles)  and spend a few days with Terry’s brother, store the RV and head back to the West Coast.  Then, it’s one more RV move this summer/fall to Tennessee (327 miles) to visit friends, Jerry and Janice, and take a couple short trips to visit relatives in Hannibal, MO and Great Lakes, Illinois.   There, we’ll leave our RV again for a month or so.  Not sure yet what we’ll do with the vehicle right now but there are possibilities.    After that, it’s fall and we’re Florida bound.

In the meantime, we’re going to do some more exploring and move fairly slow.   That’s the plan FOR NOW.  Of course, everything is subject to change.  That’s how it goes.

‘Tis life on the road.

  1. Due to our limited time in the US we sometimes are driving through many areas we wish to explore. When we are in better weather conditions we always slow down so we can really get to know an area.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  2. Years ago when I was motorcycling I was in the lead going over the Chesapeake Tunnel Bridge. What a surprised when the semi in front on me just vanished. I hit the brakes and a semi behind me told me I wasn't going to stop I just had to keep going. In the tunnel condensation dripped on you and you could hear the propellers of the ship above your head. Gives me cold chills to remember that experience.

    1. I didn't realize it was a scary tunnel. I wanted it to be a fun experience.

  3. You really do have plans. Wow. Glad you found a place to store the RV. If you get to Richmond - go to Ned and Buz for BBQ. We loved it. So much to see and do in that area. In Roanoke be sure to go up to the star. Been a long time since I've been bowling - years and years. May have to think about that.

    1. Without your own shoes and your own ball, it takes a while to warm up bowling. Then, of course, aiming was another issue! We'll put Ned and Buz on our list. Thanks for the tip.

  5. It would be fun to write all those plans down and in the end see how many came to fruition.

  8. Whew! Doing and planning a bunch of great stuff!! There is a small underwater tunnel like that near Oakland that I had to drive through after the last big San Francisco quake - like two days after. Still makes my palms sweat :-(

    1. There are several underwater tunnels here but not as long as the Chesapeake. I might have to re-think that one for sure.

  9. That sounds like a lot of leaving the RV. Are you gently moving that direction?

    1. We will be moving in that direction but just need to have places to park it and people to visit so we can spend most of the summer at our place in the Pacific NW with the kids.
