Timing the Food and More Restaurants

"Laughter is America's most important export." Walt Disney

Food, food and more food. That always seems to be the main topic for RV'ers. That's where we meet, that's what we talk about and that's what we do. New Years Eve was no exception for us. It was deciding where to go that was difficult.

Our first thought was the Elks. After all they were having an orchestra, serving international foods and was very close ..... especially since we're in their RV park. So, we walked in, checked it out and decided we were more interested in steak! Well, also because everyone inside was very dressed up and we weren't.

The Texas Roadhouse is a great steak restaurant. We love the idea of eating peanuts and throwing the shells on the floor. We also love the great salads and steaks they have. The wait was just under an hour which wasn't too bad for New Year's Eve. After ordering an appetizer and our meal, we were surprised when a few minutes later the salads showed up and we hadn't even had the appetizer yet. It seems more recently than not we've had to explain to our server the order we prefer the food and of course, request it not be on top of each other. Why is that? In a nice restaurant they should know this and especially since the tip is ever so important.

Obviously, we sent the salad back indicating the appetizer should be served before the dinner salads. The appetizer arrived soon thereafter and within another couple minutes so did our meals. Ugh .... now we'd just started our appetizer, hadn't had the salad and our steaks arrived!! You can guess what we did .... again, we sent them back explaining again the order of serving and worrying about the steaks being kept warm and overcooking before it was time to actually start devouring them. However, she finally got it right. Salad showed up when the appetizer was almost finished and steak (cooked perfectly) arrived just as we finished the salads. Everything turned out great, food was good and 2010 came in right on time .... well, on New York time for us.

And, more restaurants --

Last week we visited our favorite BBQ and mentioned it in the blog. It's Joe's BBQ in Gilbert. They have the best BBQ ever and we walked through the line, put in our order and didn't even have to wait for it to be served. I was hungry for brisket after having been served the worst brisket ever in Deming, NM. So, as soon as we arrived we planned an outing to wipe out the other one I had at the Rancher's Grill --- awful!

Garcia's Mexican Restaurant has several different locations around the area. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I think it's mainly because I love the bean dip that comes with the salsa when you first sit down. It's a family restaurant that became very popular and now they have several different restaurants around the area. My previous favorite was a Mexican restaurant in Woodland, WA. (Can you believe it ... Washington state?). However, this year it didn't seem as good as it had been before. Maybe it's because their bean dip seemed watered down. Oh well ... on to more food and other restaurants.

We also have a favorite Thai restaurant. Even though we know exactly where it is located, I can't think of the name other than "thee" Thai restaurant. Our favorite Chinese restaurant in this area is the Big Wa in Sun Lakes. Terry loves the Greek Salad at the Big Fat Greek Restaurant. And, we also have a favorite buffet. The seafood buffet that we love is located at the Harrah's Casino just south of the city of (not county of) Maricopa. On Friday nights they offer all-you-can-eat crab legs!! The buffet is to-die-for and definitely worth the trip. Hmmm... wonder what we're doing tonight now that I think of it.

Firesides Restaurant located at the Chandler Mall has the best salmon (served in a restaurant) with fried spinach. I had never had fried spinach but it is delicious. And, their salads are super fantastic. Notice how I had to stipulate a disclaimer on the salmon. The best salmon I have ever, ever had was cooked by my son. He is a master at barbecuing and especially Pacific Northwest wild salmon!

A couple touristy places to enjoy the food and close to this area are Tortilla Flats and the Mining Camp Restaurant on the way there. Both of these restaurants are pretty unique, have a colorful history and sit in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains. Dollar bills make up the wallpaper on the restaurant in Tortilla Flats. The road leading to it is quite steep, narrow and curvy. Bikers love it and on many weekends the area is filled with motorcycles out for a scenic cruise and boaters heading to Canyon Lake. The Mining Camp Restaurant serves food family style using typical camp-style utensils.

Now I'm sure once this gets posted I'll think of all the other restaurants around here I've missed. There are some great ones tucked into the corners of a few malls. We've tried many we didn't like either but no sense in putting those here. It's the good ones we love to think about. It might partly be due to the fact that I watched the movie Julie & Julia so all I can think about right now is food.

So, another blog on food and restaurants. What can I say. We're off this morning to the Mesa Swapmeet. We had looked at RV mattresses last time we went and want to measure and make sure one will fit perfectly. On the way, Paradise Bakery Cafe (Panera) for breakfast. If you haven't been there, go. They specialize in great soups, salads and sandwiches .... breakfast too.
